One of 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics, Dr. Monica Lopez is the Co-Founder and CEO of Cognitive Insights for Artificial Intelligence where she advises on responsible artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and risk management and governance. Previously, she co-founded and led as CEO La Petite Noiseuse Productions and advanced novel ethical and human-centered research and data analytics projects and policy initiatives, working with for-profit and non-profit partners in healthcare, autonomous vehicles, entertainment, and other industries. A sought-after speaker, engagements include DASER of the National Academy of Sciences, StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson for National Geographic, IS&T Electronic Imaging Symposium, IEEE Women in Engineering, AutoSens, BioTalk, Bankers Association for Finance and Trade, Sundance Film Festival, American Health Law Association, Executive Women’s Forum, and The Atlantic. Latest publications include peer-reviewed original research in the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, Journal of AI Law and Regulation, Journal of the Patent & Trademark Office Society, and International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction. Recent accolades include receiving a research award from Arizona State University College of Law’s Center for Law, Science and Innovation to propose regulatory solutions for AI in healthcare, and being named Baltimore’s Top 10 BioHealth Startup CEOs, The Business of Biotech, and a Millennial Leader of the BioHealth Capital Region, BioHealth Innovation, Inc. Dr. Lopez is also faculty at Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in the Whiting School of Engineering and School of Medicine teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students on AI and emerging technologies, ethics, business, and policy and global governance. She also teaches an AI Academy at Georgetown University for high school students. Dr. Lopez holds a PhD in Cognitive Science and a Certificate in International Studies from JHU. She also has certificates in AI Policy from the Center for AI & Digital Policy, Washington, D.C. and from the Independent Director Initiative, University of California, Berkeley School of Law. Dr. Lopez is a longtime fellow of the Salzburg Global Seminar in Salzburg, Austria and Washington, D.C., as well as an international AI Expert on Scaling Responsible AI for the GPAI (Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence).
